8 Tips For Mental Health During Coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on the lives of people around the world, and those who don’t have the virus are not immune to the effects of COVID19. In fact, we all have to deal with the consequences of the crisis. Our habits have changed substantially.

As we learn to adapt to the “new normal,” we have to remember that our mental health is as important as our physical health. Some people might be used to spending a lot of time at home, but others, especially those who also lost their jobs in the process, might be struggling.

Even if we can’t see family and friends or go to our favorite restaurants, there are some pleasant activities that we can do at home. We put together a list of things that we hope can help you cope with these challenging times. Here are 8 tips for mental health during coronavirus:

  • Exercise

Moving your body is essential to maintain a positive mindset. Ideally, try to exercise first thing in the morning before you go to work or your children wake up—to set the right mood for the day. Even ten minutes of yoga, stretching, or strength training can make a big difference.

  • Meditation

If you meditate already, you know that this is a powerful tool—meditation calms your mind and keeps you grounded. If you’re new to meditation, sit down in a comfortable position and take a couple of long breaths. Ideally, do this with your eyes closed, and focus on your breath. As you do that, you’ll notice that your fear and anxiety lose power.

  • Gratitude

Another great antidote to fear and anxiety is gratitude. When you think about what you have, instead of focusing on what’s missing in your life, you’re instantly able to see the bright side—even in a difficult situation. Make a list of three things you’re grateful for every night before going to bed. It will help you relax and sleep better.

  • Books

Instead of watching hours of Netflix or anxiety-provoking sensationalistic news channels, read books. Books stimulate your fantasy and intellect at the same time, and they can be great tools, especially when you use them to learn something new or focus on self-development.

  • Cooking

Many of our favorite restaurants are closed (needless to say, support them if/when you can), so this is a great opportunity to get better in the kitchen. Cooking is an excellent activity that you can do alone or with the family members who live with you. You can discover new recipes and add dishes to your weekly/monthly menu.

  • Nature

If you have a backyard, you’re probably admiring spring in full swing and spending time gardening—which is an excellent way to connect with the Earth and stay grounded. If you don’t have a backyard, try to go out once a day (respecting social distancing). If you live in a place with strict rules about going out, you can always connect with nature watching a documentary.

  • Video calls

As we are spending most of our day at home, it’s much easier to schedule a video call with an old friend, especially if this person lives far away and we usually have to coordinate following different time zones. Video calls can help us feel closer even if we’re far away from each other, and they're good for heart and mind.
